Nigeria is said to be the most populated nation of musicians! Whether this is true or false is not the problem - as am sure if 'auto tune/voice synthesizer' is taken away from them, we will see their number drop to its lowest to show that - nearly 70% of these 'musicians' have no voice in the first place therefore cannot sing!
Their lyrics are on a different league of its own - full of PRAYERS & WISHFUL THINKING compared to the mainstream - only in Nigeria do musicians tell tales of:
how rich they've become;
how 'baba God' is responsible for their success
how 'Baba God' should bless, guide and protect them to make more money
how they are now pulling both 'orobos' and 'lepas' for fun
how their life has changed for the better
how they've been blessed with the different cars and big houses they now own
how travelling round the world is now their hobby
how they are on top of the world
and so on..
Mainstream music - mostly metaphorical and philosophical and quite reflective of social knowledge and realities - my brethrens are self centred and quite busy rearranging 'prayers' for lyrics to feed their gluttonous pride.
I listen to these and feel, aside from 'Asa' and a handful of others like her, the nation is starved of good music - ballard, highlife, reggae, jazz.
Please join me in saying NO MORE - we are sick and tired listening to squirky voices praying, wishing and telling stories of themselves - sometimes, it's even difficult to discern whether the singer is male or female due to the synthesizer-coated singing voice! The nation is slowly being suffocated by copycats trying hybrid of rap, funky beats and every other known music genre all IN ONE!
As one song I listened to said - ALL NA WASH!
Asa - Jailer
