Stong Wind Coming To Nigeria, Be Prepared

According to a latest report made by an reporter of Punchng, a latest report confirms the coming of a very strong wind which they say possibly might hit the country during the dry season, they gave out advice to Nigerians "Be prepared they concluded".

Recently, NIMET released a statement advising Nigerians to take precautions against violent winds that may occur during the dry season, due to the effects of climate change. In the release, the Director General of NIMET, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, said that windy weather was expected during the dry season, in the wake of intense rains which had led to more floods in the months of September and October. He cautioned people not to stay under trees during the period. In his words, “We are transiting now from rainy to dry season, the kind of things we may experience are violent winds. Therefore, we advise people to avoid staying under trees. The reason why we alert people is for them to know ahead of time and take necessary precautions. We have no ability to protect natural disasters but the ability to observe what the weather is and inform the people early.’’

As is the practice all over the world at this time climate change is more accepted as a global threat, climatic shocks are primarily ameliorated by structuring effective mechanisms for early warning and disaster preparedness and support for integrated action. This also helps to reduce vulnerability to climate change, especially for a developing nation like Nigeria. NIMET and the National Emergency Management Agency are the two government bodies on whose laps these functions naturally fall, until the Federal Government brings in more streamlined climate change outfits. Therefore, against the backdrop of the above notice of strong winds from NIMET, one part of the climate-adaptation job has been done; but it seems that our ‘‘slow-motion’’ culture makes the remaining part elusive. This is why I am writing this piece. For lack of a thorough integrated climate action in preparation for the forecast strong wind, it is now the duty of the National Orientation Agency, the local opinion leaders, the media, the activists and the privileged few to swing into action.

The plan is to tell the government and appropriate authorities to make a thorough assessment of exposed trees and publicly-placed aerial equipment like communication masts, towers, advert pylons, bulwarks and other public utility heavy structures that could be uprooted by heavy winds. Then the communities at risk of these strong winds have to be approached with ‘end-to-end’ early warning systems, spanning all steps from hazard detection to community response; gladly, our society is now more prone to digest ecological information now that we have witnessed nationwide flooding catastrophe. Families must have their roofs tested for strength and staying power; and other structures, public and private, must be reinforced adequately. This will be necessary to save lives and further damage of other properties and moving vehicles ...Source
